    Colaisde na Gàidhlig/ Gaelic College

    Colaisde na / The Gaelic College has an international reputation for its contribution to the promotion and preservation of traditional Gaelic culture, offering instruction in over ten disciplines, and year-round learning and fun. As a cultural destination, it will delight visitors with the unique opportunity to experience first-hand the living culture of the Nova Scotia Gaelic people.

    Immerse yourself in the traditional Scottish dance, music folklore, and language at North America’s only Gaelic College. The Gaelic College was founded in 1938 by Rev. A.W.R. MacKenzie as a school devoted to the study and preservation of the Gaelic Language and Celtic Arts & Crafts. The College programs and activities include a summer school for student and adults, Gaelic Immersion weeks, March Break Camps, and a Summer Ceilidh Series and concert featuring some of Cape Breton’s finest performers. While at the College visit the Great Hall of Clans and learn more the Clan History. The College features an excellent gift shop featuring tartans, kilts and much more.

    Colouratura Art Gallery

    Directly on the Cabot Trail, this former church turned gallery welcomes you with an impressive array of some of the finest art work from Cape Breton artists. Also the home of Cabotto Chocolates, the Spirit of Adventure, Bars and Truffles – handmade on site. Look for the bright blue roof!

    Giant MacAskill Museum

    Artifacts belonging to Angus MacAskill, the Cape Breton giant who stood 7 ft. 9 in. tall. His chair, clothing, bed, boot and walking sticks, as well as items of interest from the early 1800s to present day, are on display. Giant MacAskill died in 1863. His grave is in the Englishtown cemetery nearby.

    Glass Artisans

    Expressions In Glass

    Glass Artisans Studio and Gallery is located on the Cabot Trail on beautiful Cape Breton Island. The gallery and studio is owned by Wendy Smith, a stained glass artist whose work is featured in the gallery along with many others.

    We invite glass artists from all over to come and rent the Flameworking Studio, Casting & Cold Working Studio and Glass Blowing Studio for one or two weeks during the summer and fall.  While they create new work at Glass Artisans Studio & Gallery visitors can watch the artists work their magic with glass.

    Glass Demo’s are daily June – October in one or all of the studios.

    We also offer one hour Flameworking and Glass Blowing classes when our instructors are available. Just send us an email for more information about classes and for booking details.

    *Rentals are reserved for Frequent Shooters: those who have previously received instruction at Highland Bow and can provide their signed Frequent Shooters card at the time of shooting.

    Have your own Bow & Arrows? $15 +hst
    As of 2018, it is $15 plus hst to shoot your own bows and arrows at Highland Bow targets.

    Colaisde na Gàidhlig, the Gaelic College,  carries unique, handcrafted treasures made just for you. Our kiltmaker specializes in custom, hand-sewn kilts and clothing in your choice of tartan, including ties, scarves, skirts and more. Professional-level weavers create one-of-a-kind pieces by beautifully blending colours and fibres to produce wearable items including shrugs, shawls and scarves.     Ski Tuonela

    Wildfire Pottery

    Wildfire Pottery features the artistry of Sarah Beck. Sarah is best known for her raku pottery sculptures of puffins, bears, owls and other animals which exhibit whimsy and charm, but she also makes functional tumblers and plates, intricate laser cut jewellery, prints and cards of her colorful animal portrait paintings and a multitude of other creations. As the pottery is also a working studio visitors may see the artist at work and learn a bit about the process involved.

    Woodsmith Studio

    Woodsmiths Studio transforms the finest of local Cape Breton woods into functional art.

    Using local Cape Breton woods, our expert Woodsmith, Bob Evans, has created a variety of unique, original and very functional products. With well over 40 years devoted to teaching, designing and creating, Bob offers a finished product that is not only original but produced in limited quantities.  Many items depict a variety of woods including beautiful yellow birch, beech, oak, ash, maple, Birdseye maple, spalted woods, cherry, apple and walnut. Learn from Bob and his expert staff the process that begins with drying the wood in a kiln to the finished product.
