    Milling Frolic

    Come and join us at the table for songs and friendly conversation at the Highland Village milling frolic. The Gaels way to make the cloth ready for home use was to wet it, beat it and make a time of it, while communally singing choral songs in rhythm during the milling frolic.

Join our experts on surveys, lake safaris and other fun activities to learn about biodiversity in the park. An opportunity to see wild creatures up close and support the protection of this special place. Location: Freshwater Lake, Cape Breton Highlands National Park Proud to partner with Cape Breton University, Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources, Mi'kmaq Environmental Learning Centre, Canadian Wildlife Federation and iNaturalist.ca. Come celebrate with us! There are two ways you can get involved: 1) Participate in one or more species surveys with a scientist-led team. 2) Join the drop-in activities and plan an afternoon of fun that works with your family’s schedule. You could also pack a picnic and make it into a day of adventure. Lots of hands-on activities and opportunities to see wild creatures up close. Species Surveys Schedule Led by professional scientists and experienced naturalists, Species Surveys are where species data is collected for future conservation uses and where experts share their knowledge and enthusiasm with the public. The Species Surveys will last approximately 3 hours and can accommodate 12-15 participants. We have 7 surveys covering various topics. Our experts are from Parks Canada, Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources, Cape Breton University, University of New Brunswick, Dalhousie University, St. Francis Xavier University, Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre, and local naturalists.

    Aviation Day

    Aviation Day 2017 will feature two workshops with Nigel Isle. In the first one, at 11:00, children use basic household items to create a personalized mini glider that flies brilliantly. In the robot workshop, at 2:00, a CD, a motor, and batteries come together to create a small robot, and from there kids can decorate to their hearts content! All materials are provided. Nigel will also bring his flight simulator and kids can try that out on our big screen TV. In addition to Nigel's activities, members of the Sydney RC group will fill Water with their remote-controlled airplanes, and one of their members will build a remote controlled airplane on the Silver Dart Stage throughout the day. Activities run from 11:00 - 3:00, and admission and workshops are free.
