“Where the mountains meet the sea”
Cape
Breton is the proud home of the Bras d’Or Lakes. Known
as the
“great inland
sea” it spans 450 square
miles, all of which offer great experiences for any outdoor
enthusiast. Surrounding the lakes is a scenic drive, rich
in history, wildlife "the
American bald eagle is often seen soaring in the sky
overhead" , and
breath-taking views are on
ever turn.
Along the way you can stop by
museums such as the Highland Village in Iona, where you can experience
life as a Scottish settler or perhaps the Alexander Graham Bell Museum
in Baddeck which celebrates Bell’s
remarkable achievements. It was here at his summer home, “Beinn Bhreagh”,
where the first power controlled flight in the British Empire took place
in 1909.
Known world-wide by boating enthusiasts are our fog free waters, which
make a perfect environment for kayaking and sailing. Boat tours can be
found in Baddeck, a great opportunity to see our scenery from a
different perspective or even become a lobster fisherman for a day!
Swimming is also popular among tourists, with our countless beaches
providing a relaxed and serene setting. Stop by for a true Cape Breton
tradition of tea and homemade goods!
