Cape Breton Island is home to the Cabot Trail, one of the most spectacular
scenic routes in the world. Look-offs and rest stops dot the trail,
providing stunning views of the scenery and a place to relax along your
trip. Named after John Cabot, the world famous explorer who found the land
in 1497, the trail spans over 300km and 8 regions.
At the traditional
start of the Cabot Trail in Baddeck, a wide range of services and activities
are offered. Every night during the summer months the Baddeck Gathering
ceilidhs are held. It is the perfect location for an evening of Cape Breton
fiddling and dance. Further along you’ll come to St.Ann’s Bay. This area
has strong cultural roots to Scotland, evident by the presence of the
St.Ann’s Gaelic College, the only institute of its kind in North America.
Just an adventure away is the largest waterfall in Nova Scotia. Found in
North River, it stands 104’ tall. Going up the windy coast you make your way
up to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. An outdoor enthusiasts
paradise, it features beaches, wildlife and over 25 hiking trails. Moose,
eagles and whales are frequently seen in this area.
On the other side of the
mountain range is the community of Pleasant Bay, which is home to the
Whale Interpretive Centre. As you wind down the trail you’ll come to the
French Acadian village of Cheticamp. This is the exit of the Cape Breton
Highlands National Park. Your last destination along the Cabot Trail is
Middle River, a great spot to try your hand at fishing.
Don’t miss the adventure and discovery that
awaits you!
