Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site

Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site of Canada is a member of Parks Canada’s family of special places and spaces that commemorate our natural and cultural heritage. Here you can explore the amazing worlds of a lifetime that has touched all of us. You’re in for a pleasant surprise because the telephone was only the beginning of Alexander Graham Bell’s life-long pursuit of knowledge and invention.

Discover how air and water captured Dr. Bell’s imagination and how ideas led him to transmit sound on light and create a treadle powered sound recording device, man-carrying kites, airplanes and a record setting-hydrofoil boat.
Find out how he bridged the world between sound and silence, participate in experiment, kite-making and kite-flying programs, enjoy hands-on activities designed especially for children and take in a presentation in Mr. Bell Theatre.
Plan to spend a minimum of two hours in this accessible facility where interactive displays, films, artifacts, models and a beautiful historic photo collection provide an entertaining and informative experience for everyone. Ask about our children’s area. Picnic facilities are available on the beautiful grounds overlooking the Bras d’Or Lakes where Alexander Graham Bell and his associates made history.

Be sure to visit the Museum Store and the Tetra Café.

    Uisge Ban Falls

Uisge Ban Falls, a Gaelic name meaning "white water", is located 14.5 km (9 miles) north of Baddeck. From Highway 105 take exit 9. A 7 km (4.3 mile) trail system provides access to a 16 metre (50ft) high waterfall and a climax hardwood forest.

The Falls Trail, from the parking lot to Uisge Ban Falls and return is approximately 3.5 km (2.2 miles) in length and requires about 90 minutes to complete. From the parking lot, the trail passes through a field regenerating with balsam fir and white spruce. Once the trail reaches Falls Brook it follows the brook upstream in a northeasterly direction, first winding through a mixed forest and then entering a forest comprised largely of maple, birch and beech. The deep stream valley narrows dramatically in the vicinity of Uisge Ban Falls. At the Falls, the sheer walls of the gorge tower 150 metres (500 ft) on either side.

From Falls Brook, The River Trail, proceeds northernly.  It is about 3.5 km (2.2 miles) and requires about one hour to travel. The first section of the trail follows along the banks of the North Branch Baddeck River before travelling inland. It winds through a climax sugar maple, yellow birch, beech forest at the foot of the river valley's steep slope.  Please Note: this trail is closed until further notice and a bridge is out on the River Trail.

Please note information on both trails taken from NS Dept. of Natural Resources brochure "Provincial Hiking Trails of Victoria County, Cape Breton Island.
